About Claartje van Sijl

I am a philosophical career counselor and trainer. From my home base in Utrecht (The Netherlands), I assist early and mid career academics throughout the world with questions of purpose, direction, balance and confidence in life and career. My PhD in philosophy combined with my broad training as a certified coach/counselor enable me to work at a deeper level with career questions.

Clients appreciate how my open and compassionate attitude creates a safe environment to look within themselves. They value how my concrete tools help them clarify their mission and trust in their expertise. Because of my personal experience with the quirks of academia, they find they do not need to explain to me the special requirements of working flexibly, independently and intensely on (research)projects with much responsibility, high pressure to perform, and long term job uncertainty.

Employability at the university

January 13, 2014/0 Comments/in Academic life, PhD, Postdoc/by Claartje van Sijl

Many employability measures are available at universities, but they are still unknown and underused. This is the result of research by the Taskforce Employability for Academic Education of the SoFoKles fund. Especially early career researchers are in a position to benefit greatly from measures and activities that support sustainable career development. Therefore, I have asked one of the researchers, […]

Inequality in academia

December 18, 2013/2 Comments/in Academic life, Balance, PhD, Postdoc/by Claartje van Sijl

These are two sobering figures for the current situation in academia in the Netherlands: Percentage of women professors in EU countries and the gender distribution in academic careers. I have written about this before in a post on motherhood and academia. Before the end of year festivities caught up with me was at a symposium of the LNVH […]

Vrijheid en expert zijn

October 14, 2013/2 Comments/in Academic life, Confidence, PhD, Postdoc/by Claartje van Sijl

Powers and pitfalls of introvert researchers

September 26, 2013/0 Comments/in Academic life, Balance, Confidence, PhD, Postdoc/by Claartje van Sijl

A Ted talk by Susan Cain on the power of introverts got me thinking about finding a balance between the power and pitfalls of introversion as a researcher. Cain argues passionately that valuable deep thought and truly creative and innovative ideas can only bubble to the surface if given enough quietness and solitude. Yet, she […]

De onzekerheid van een promovendus

September 16, 2013/0 Comments/in Academic life, Confidence, PhD, Postdoc, Purpose & direction/by Claartje van Sijl

“slippery stuff like philosophy”

September 2, 2013/0 Comments/in Academic life, PhD, Philosophy, Postdoc/by Claartje van Sijl

Schrijfblokkade of afrondings-angst

August 15, 2013/0 Comments/in Confidence/by Claartje van Sijl

What am I about?

April 14, 2013/0 Comments/in Balance, PhD, Postdoc, Purpose & direction/by Claartje van Sijl

Some weeks ago my article “Create Your Future” appeared in Pandora, a magazine for the women network of Utrecht University. On their biennial network day I provided a workshop on how to balance professional and personal images while profiling yourself as a professional scientist using social media that require a more personal perspective. The main […]

Value of the Dutch Approach of the PhD

January 22, 2013/2 Comments/in PhD, Purpose & direction/by Claartje van Sijl

Today, the Dutch government confirmed the current Dutch approach to the PhD, i.e. where PhD candidates are seen and rewarded as employees, not students. Dutch universities (VSNU) have been trying to create the option that PhD candidates get a student status, which would be much cheaper. They encounter much resistance, both from organizations of PhD […]

How to write for newspapers as a PhD candidate

December 13, 2012/0 Comments/in PhD, Postdoc/by Claartje van Sijl

The workshop that I organized yesterday with Platform Hooft was a huge success. Over 30 PhD candidates in the humanities got a hands-on training in writing opinion articles from well known Dutch newspaper editors Chris Rutenfrans, Jaffe Vink, Derk Walters and Anouk van Kampen. They learned how to grab their readers’ fleeting attention and get their […]
